Sugar

Sugar started out as a collaboration with noted theatre director Rachael Swain (Stalker Theatre Company) to create a suite of works for the Liverpool Capital of Culture. Originally commissioned as a project to engage creative Hip Hop communities in the reclamation of public space under threat from ‘regeneration’ (or gentrification), Sugar used the history of sugar and the associated slave trade to create a new graphic vocabulary that mediated between performance and public space design.

Planned were a major ground design adjacent to the ‘Three Graces’, the plastic transformation of a dance language into a permanent skateboard park, a five country youth culture 24 hour radio event and a multimedia installation documenting graffiti and post-graffiti practices across Europe.

The downsizing of this ambitious project as a result of the resignation of the commissioning Artistic Director, itself the result of local political implosion, was a lesson in bureaucratic destructiveness: of the original design concept only the street theatre performance survived, a work brilliantly choreographed by Serge Coulibahy and directed by Rachael Swain, and realised with artists from both Liverpool and Marseille.
